What “made to order” means for you
A made-to-order bed isn’t pulled off a shelf. The fabric you pick is cut for your frame, and the frame is built once your order is in. In practice, that gets you three things:
- Your fabric and colour, not a short factory list. Pick the exact shade that suits your walls and bedding.
- A frame built for your size. Choose from single (3ft) to super king (6ft). Product pages offer extras such as taller headboards (up to +40 cm) and split headboards for tight stairs.
- One workshop from start to finish. Building, upholstering and finishing all happen in Halifax, so there’s no chain of suppliers to chase if something needs attention.
Questions before you order? Call or WhatsApp +44 7902 412379, or email admin@stuporbedsandmattresses.co.uk (Monday to Thursday, 9 am to 5 pm). We sell online with no showroom, so we answer by phone, WhatsApp, and email. You can also read about us on our About Us page.
Which luxury bed style suits your room?
| Style | Look | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Strip bed | Vertical fluted panels, clean modern lines | Contemporary and smaller bedrooms |
| Wing bed | Tall headboard with extended side wings | Larger rooms and a hotel-style feel |
| Velvet bed | Soft, rich pile that catches the light | Bold or glamorous interiors |
| Panel bed | Clean padded sections | Minimal, calm bedrooms |
| TV bed | Upholstered frame with a hidden TV lift | Master bedrooms and apartments |
| Ottoman bed | Storage under a gas-lift base | Rooms short on storage |
Strip beds: modern and easy to style
Strip beds use vertical upholstered panels to add height and texture without crowding the room. They suit modern and minimalist bedrooms and work with most colour schemes. Our current favourites:
- Alcira Strip Bed: a contemporary fluted design, from £265.
- Aina Strip Bed: padded headboard with a matching footboard, from £309.
- Amparo Strip Bed: grey upholstery that suits neutral rooms, from £319.
Wing beds: the bed becomes the feature
A wing bed has a tall headboard with side panels that curve out around you. It makes a big visual impact and gives you something comfortable to lean against when you’re sitting up to read. It needs space, so it works best in medium to large rooms. Wing styles look especially good in velvet, where the pile shows off the curve.
- Katia Velvet Wing Bed: available in several colours, from £280.
- Arabella Wing Bed: a velvet wing design, from £309.
Velvet beds: warm, soft and bold
Velvet changes colour as the light moves across it, which is why a velvet headboard draws the eye. Popular shades include emerald, navy, grey, black, champagne and blush. Metallic lamps and neutral walls let the colour do the talking.
TV beds: no separate TV unit
A TV bed hides a television in the footboard and raises it at the touch of a button. When the TV is down, you have a normal upholstered bed. It also means no TV stand and fewer visible cables, which helps in smaller rooms and apartments.
Choosing your fabric
Fabric changes both how the bed looks and how it wears.
| Fabric | Look and feel | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Plush velvet | Soft, rich, bold colours | Best for master and adult bedrooms |
| Crushed velvet | Shimmering, textured finish | Hides creases well |
| Chenille | Soft woven texture | Hard-wearing, a good family choice. It can snag if pets claw at it. |
| Bouclé | Looped, cosy, designer look | Loops can catch on rough contact, so it suits lower-traffic bedrooms |
| Linen | Natural, relaxed, breathable | A calm, understated look |
Not sure which to pick? Velvet for glamour, chenille for everyday durability, bouclé for a modern neutral room, and linen for a Scandinavian feel. The Alcira Strip Bed, for example, comes in nine fabric ranges (including Naples, Coniston, Arizona and faux leather) and more than 60 colours; options vary by design. Want to see a fabric first? Ask us for samples by phone, WhatsApp or email.
Luxury bed sizes (UK)
Upholstered frames are bigger than the mattress they hold, because the headboard and side panels add width. Measure your room, the walking space around the bed, and your door and stair access before you order.
| UK size | Mattress size | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Single (3ft) | 90 × 190 cm | Children’s and guest rooms |
| Small double (4ft) | 120 × 190 cm | Smaller rooms |
| Double (4ft 6in) | 135 × 190 cm | Standard couples’ bedrooms |
| King (5ft) | 150 × 200 cm | Main bedrooms |
| Super king (6ft) | 180 × 200 cm | Large bedrooms |
Exact frame dimensions are on each product page. On the Alcira Strip Bed, a small double or double adds £50 to the £265 single price, a king adds £80, and a super king adds £120. Pair your frame with a mattress in the same size.
Ottoman storage beds
An ottoman bed uses a gas-lift base. Lift the mattress platform, and you get a full-length storage compartment underneath for bedding, spare clothes and anything else you’d rather not see. They suit small rooms, flats and guest bedrooms where there’s no space for extra furniture. On the Alcira Strip Bed, gas-lift storage adds £120, an end-lift divan ottoman base adds £180, and two or four drawers are also available.

Buying a bed and mattress together
A frame and mattress sold as a set means the sizes match, and you only place one order. Mattress options start at a soft-to-medium spring memory foam mattress and go up to a firm 3000 pocket spring, with pillow-top versions of the pocket-sprung ranges. See our Beds with Mattress range.

How to choose in three steps
- Check your room. Large rooms can take a wing bed, a tall headboard, or a super king. Smaller rooms usually suit a strip, panel or low-profile headboard.
- Match your style. Strip beds and neutral fabrics for modern rooms. Velvet and wing headboards for glamour. Linen and bouclé for minimalist, calm spaces.
- Decide on storage. Short of space? Go for an ottoman base. Plenty of storage already? A slatted frame keeps things simple.

Velvet gives the richest look. Chenille is the most hard-wearing for daily use. Bouclé suits modern neutral rooms, and linen gives a natural, relaxed finish.
